Reality Turns Pages

She sees her life in the form of a book. A novel, really. A wonderful work of fiction. A beautiful disaster, as she calls it. As "innocent" bystanders turn her pages, they see scribbles and doodles. They see sketches and paintings. They see words. But what does it all mean? A gust of wind comes and forces her story open to all who are willing to read. She knows she cannot trust them, but she has no choice. To protect herself she destroys her secrets. As the wind turns the pages, the readers wonder what has happened. Full pages have been torn out. Halves of pages have been burned. But why? Because she cannot trust. Because she cannot bear to be hurt again. Because she has been betrayed, lied to, and no longer knows what to believe. But most of all ... because she wants you to think she's perfect. She likes to believe that if she "erases" her mistakes and pretends they do not exist then they don't. She likes to believe that for as long as you see this half...

I'm with you.

I have not posted on here in quite some time. I've been keeping busy (distracted), but a lot has happened. Some of what has happened has led me to this post, specifically. I love the message behind Colbie Caillat's song "Try." Songs that promote inner beauty and self-confidence are always a hit. However, after listening to the song a few times, I realized I could tweak the lyrics a bit to hopefully help another group of women: women who have survived  rape and sexual violence. I have come to realize that there are often two major changes in a woman who survives these horrible circumstances. She either hides away, feels disgusting and/or shameful, and tries to become as small as possible OR she decides that her body is now worthless, that if he can take what he wants regardless, why is she protecting it anymore? Either way, you end up with a beaten down woman, one who usually believes it is her fault, and one who will hopefully resonate with this song. You don't ...

In Another Life

verse 1 I closed my eyes one last time Before I pulled the trigger I gave you one last chance To tell me you were sorry I was happy in your arms Didn't know she was in them too We both kept your secrets You just kept doing what you do Breaking hearts and playing games We'll never be the same chorus Cross my heart and hope to die Don't waste your breath Don't waste my time Just to tell the same old lies I will be gone before you come  I left you a note, next to the gun I'll take your secrets to my grave But you better tell her before it's too late verse 2 I'll never know or understand  What I did or didn't do To no longer have your hand All I know is you left one day You didn't say another word Now it's my turn to do the same Your name is poison to my lips I'll kiss the world goodbye with (chorus) verse 3 You never meant a word you said Your lips were cold as ice So when you find my soul is dead Don...

Everything Affects Everything

“You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything…affects everything.”  – Jay Asher,  Thirteen Reasons Why

Where is the Justice in "The Justice System?"

For many years now, I have been interested in the justice system; a justice system I believe needs a lot of help. We do not have a united front against crime in this country and that leads to the failure to appropriately and accurately convict and sentence.  To prove this consider the story of Troy Davis, a young man accused of murdering a Savannah, Georgia police officer. Davis was convicted and sentenced to the death penalty. However, people accused of crimes equal to or worse than Troy Davis’ alleged crime have not been executed. Why? Because only some states still consider capital punishment legal, when in reality it is a paradox and the epitome of cruel and unusual punishment.  As Troy Davis awaited his execution date, he filed numerous appeals and was denied clemency by the Georgia Board of Paroles and Pardons. This happens fairly often, but this case was different. Troy Davis' appeals were denied even though the majority of the witnesses from the original trial came...
